5 Places that are Making a Change
There are many places in the world that have made changes to better the environment and by doing so, have influenced other people around them to change too. When there are more people involved in making a change, it’s more likely that they will continue to do so and that will help improve the world around us. The following are five places that have made big changes and because of their influence, helped change the world too.
1) Uganda
Uganda has made great strides in ending poverty. In just ten years, Uganda has transformed itself from one of Africa’s poorest countries to being on its way to becoming a middle-income country. The leaders of Uganda understand how sustainable development can come from building an economy that is based on human and natural capital, not natural resources. This message is repeated by their government through projects like Vision 2040 and I Will Educate My Child Campaign where Ugandans have been empowered to become active participants in their own development process.
2) South Africa
In South Africa, 100% of public schools provide free schooling to students. By 2020, it is estimated they will reach universal enrollment in primary education. However, there is still much work to be done with regards to providing better quality education and increased access to secondary education. At least 15,000 classrooms need to be built as well as supporting infrastructure such as sports facilities and roads. These must be planned out and budgeted for so they can become a reality soon.
3) China
There’s no doubt China is one of the most influential countries on Earth. For example, in 2017, they overtook Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy. That being said, they have their fair share of issues; however, under President Xi Jinping (who will be in power until 2022), things are changing for women and children across China—here’s why
4) Finland
If you’re not aware of what Finland is doing to change their world, it’s time to take notice. The small country has recently been awarded as having both one of the best education systems in existence, and is ranked as having one of most gender-equal countries. This is all thanks to smart policies designed for childcare, quality education and smart use of technology.
5) The United States
The United States is currently undergoing an ongoing effort to create opportunities for more sustainable living. Cities around America, such as San Francisco and Portland, have been implementing changes in building and zoning ordinances to decrease reliance on gas-powered transportation. Although there is still much work to be done, it is clear that cities like these will continue being at the forefront of ecological change around our nation.
